Johan Söderström

Johan Söderström
Johan Söderström is one of the selected artists for the upcoming DOM Art Residence in collaboration with the cultural association Artists Residencies as part of the fourth edition of ExtrArtis @extrartis in August 2025 in Sorrento, Italy.
  • Based in Oslo and represented by Buer Gallery (NO), Johan Söderström merges conceptual rigor with painterly presence. His process-based practice sits at the intersection of painting, sculpture, and installation, using construction filler cast into oak panels to explore the tension between language and matter, presence and absence.
  • Rather than persuading, Johan’s work intrigues. Deceptively minimal, his grey-and-white compositions are formed through meticulous physical gestures - spreading, pressing, rolling - then turned into sanded flat, that reveal traces of depth and time. Inspired by everything from Richard Serra to kintsugi, these textured surfaces serve as quiet records of human condition, vulnerability, and political entanglement.
  • Educated at Kunstakademiet in Trondheim and widely exhibited across Scandinavia, Johan also works with participatory projects, inviting viewers into his process. His practice is driven by the desire to interrogate alienation—personal, material, and social—and to create spaces where perception meets empathy.
