Joan Priego García is primarily known as a sculptor. For many years, wood has been the central material of his artistic practice — a living, warm, and versatile medium through which he explores form, texture, and the relationship between material and imagination.
In recent years, Priego has expanded his practice by creating a series of works on plywood. While remaining deeply connected to wood, these pieces allow him to explore the language of drawing and image-making in new ways.
The inspiration for this series comes from his work as a teacher of sculpture and painting. Through his daily interaction with children, the artist has become fascinated by the freedom, spontaneity, and emotional honesty of their drawings. Their ability to communicate complex feelings through simple shapes and vivid imagery has become a significant source of inspiration.
Rather than directly reproducing children's drawings, Priego reinterprets their visual language, preserving their sense of playfulness, openness, and creative freedom. The resulting works create a dialogue between professional artistic practice and a child's intuitive way of seeing the world.
By combining his long-standing relationship with wood and his interest in children's creativity, Priego explores themes of imagination, memory, play, and self-expression, inviting viewers to reconnect with a more curious and uninhibited perspective on reality.
